The 3rd Reading of the Criminal Cases Review Commission Bill has taken place on the 5th February . The Private Members Bill by William Wragg has made remarkable progress and has general cross party support .
The Bill will see a new power for the CCRC to access private documents which it is currently precluded from doing in accordance with its Section 17 Powers . The new power will have to be sanctioned by a Crown Court Judge . What is less clear is how this will be determined and what if any sanctions can be brought to bear over and above a contempt of court order .
Perhaps the most disturbing feature so far was the lack of understanding shown in some quarters during the debate . For example about how prevalent miscarriage of justices are and why the reactive nature of the commission remains a major concern .
Nonetheless it is a step in the right direction .
